Task 3- Flipbooks

What is a flip book?

A flip book is a small book which captures movement whilst flicking through the pages which contains a series of images at different angles for the movement to work.In the 19th and 20th century, Flip books were very popular.

As you can see in the images below, these are images which are ready to be made into a flip book. You can see that each image is different as there is a different object added, in this case an animal which creates a story if you look at the images carefully because something different is happening on every page. Once made into a flip book, it is easier to see the story come to life as it will be in movement.

What do you need to do to create an effective flip book?

To make an effective flip book, it is important to use the right amount of images in order for your flip book to work. It is considered to have around 30 images to make a flip book, however this depends how many different movement actions you want to have in your book. It is important to have lots of images as you will be flicking through the book quickly.

The 2 images above, are examples of flip books which are in movement. When they are in movement they look almost 3D. I think that flip books are interesting and clever because the way a series of image s are laid out, you can begin to see a story been created , then once you put them together and flick through them, you can see the story you imagined coming to life.

 Ideas

1. Board Game

For this idea i am going to set up a board game. I am going to take more than 50 shoots because i want it to be long rather than short.I am going to have someone playing the board game Monopoly while i take continuous shoots.

1*someone rolls dice
2*moves their counter
3*does what the space they land on says
4*buys property that they land on]
5*counts out money for property
6*hands money to banker
7*banker collects money then gives change is necessary
8*gives them the card
9*rolls dice
10*rolls dice
*the steps above continue (takes a card rather than buying a property)

2. Balloon

For this idea i am going to need a person and a balloon with helium in.I am going to take not asd many shoots as the board game idea as there isn't as many steps to capture, however i will take around 45-50 so the flip book isn't short.

1*Person takes the balloon from someone(pretending to pay for it)
2*Person looks at balloon
3*Person has hold of balloon
4*Walks around with balloon
5*person eats something whilst still holding balloon
6*finishes food
7*walks more with balloon then lets go
8*camera follows balloon up into sky until out of sight

3.Skateboard

For this idea i am going to find someone who is skateboarding on the street.I am going to take more than 50 shoots as i will need to capture lots of the tricks that they do and every movement leading up towards the tricks then after them.

4.Bubbles

For this idea i will need a pot of bubbles and a person.I am going to capture the person blowing the bubbles then follow the bubbles in whatever direction they go.I thought this was a good idea as i can capture the different colours in the bubbles.

1*Person standing side on to camera
2*person takes stick out pot of bubbles
3*they blow a bubble slowly
4*Blow another bubble
5*camera follows bubbles into the sky

Final idea

My final idea wasn't actually an idea which I had planned to do. I decided that my other ideas didn't really work apart from my board game idea. I took photos of someone playing a board came which which I tried to make them into  a flipbook, didn't really look effective and didn't work well . I came up with an idea which was different as I would have to shoot differently. I decided that I was going to do an animation with little models of some sort.  In the end I used model cows which I had to carry out single shots when I was taking photos of them in different positions. When I put the images together into a flipbook, this idea worked really well and i'm glad I chose it .
